Summer Escapes Hamptons Or Bust

It may feel like that puffy coat is permanently fused to your skin. But perk up--it’ll be mai tai season before you know it. To help get a head start on warm-weather vacation planning, we’re kicking off a new weekly series, “Summer Escapes.”

Up first: the Hamptons.

Where to stay Looking for house rentals? Get started ASAP. Local realtor David Zazula over at Halstead East Hampton estimates about half of the season-long rentals are already secured. This said, now is the time to lock in partial-season stays--say, August only. For a single week or long weekend away, we love under-the-radar joints, like the East Deck in Ditch Plains (an old-school roadside motel) and La Maison Blanche on Shelter Island (an impeccable eight-suite boutique hotel). Or try the stunning (albeit pricier) Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton, which officially opens in May.

What to get excited about Aside from the much-needed fresh air, the South Fork restaurant scene is the real reason to hit the LIE in 2013. Look out for Delmonico’s new Southampton outpost, to debut in April. Or get ready to dig in again to 2012’s superstar rookies--like Bell & Anchor in Sag Harbor, which has gorgeous marina views and international twists on classic fare (oh hello, Thai-chile mussels). And even this far in advance, we’re already stoked for comedian Jay Mohr at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on June 9.

Zazula says now is the time to pounce on rentals, as the closer it gets to the season, the less options you'll have. 3

Before you can say Memorial Day, Delmonico's will have opened its Southampton outpost (in the old Savanna's spot). The exact menu hasn't been released yet, but our sights are already set on its famous lobster Newburg. (268 Elm St., Southampton)

Last summer we saw a stellar crop of newbies--like The Coast in Montauk, which dishes up seafood caught right off the docks. Scallop carpaccio, we're coming for you. (41 S. Euclid Ave., Montauk)

Tom Colicchio's latest venture--the restaurant in Topping Rose House (a renovated boutique hotel in Bridgehampton)--opened quietly in the off-season but is sure to be a major hit this summer. (1 Bridgehampton Sag Harbor Tpk.)

Come May, you'll be able to stay in the Topping Rose House hotel--and reservations are going fast. It's a little pricier than others in the area but far more luxurious. (Think: Frette linens and Naturopathica bath products.)

For a more affordable (but still pristine) place to stay, look into La Maison Blanche on Shelter Island. Open only since 2011, the eight-room boutique hotel is a peaceful delight.

But of course, nothing beats an entire house. Halstead's David Zazula says now is the time to pounce on rentals, as the closer it gets to the season, the less options you'll have.
